How to make clear ice cubes?
Perhaps you have noticed the beautiful, crystal clear ice cubes the bartender uses at the restaurant or bar. They shine so nicely in the cocktail! But that’s not exactly how your ice cubes turn out when you pull them out of the freezer and twist them out of the plastic mold.
But are clear ice cubes so crucial to the taste of the cocktail? When the ice cubes are clear, they last longer in your cocktail and maintain the right temperature. This means that your cocktail will taste as good as possible!
So how do you make these clear ice cubes? Here you get a complete step-by-step guide. In addition, you get a list of the things you need to reach your goal.
However, you can’t make them in a few hours like you might be used to. Are you having the party tomorrow? Then the best solution is to have clear ice cubes delivered.

Preparation for making clear ice cubes
Fill the cooler with water almost to the brim. Then you put the cooler in the freezer, but without the lid.
It must be taken out when the cooler has been in the freezer for 24 hours. Keep the time accurate and avoid going beyond plus/minus 1 hour. If the ice takes less time, it has not been cooled sufficiently. If it takes longer, the ice cubes will not be as clear as they could be.
After 24 hours, place the cooling box with the opening downwards on a lard board. After a few minutes, you can hear the ice loosening.
When you lift the cooler, you will see a surface that is not entirely frozen. You cut off this part of the ice with a bread knife. In the end, you are left with the part of the ice that is completely frozen.
Find your knife and hammer!
Place a tea towel on a table and place the lard with the block of ice on top. Then the fat board slides as little as possible for you.
Now you can start cutting out the clear ice cubes! With the bread knife, saw lengthwise from the block of ice so that you cut through the thinnest piece. Try not to press too hard with the knife and instead see through the ice. You can give the knife a light blow with a hammer when you have come a good way through.
If you do not use the ice cubes immediately, you can store them in the freezer in a plastic bag.
The final result
You decide for yourself how big the clear ice cubes should be. We recommend cutting them into large squares, as this gives the best result in a cocktail – and they last longer.
It will, of course, be challenging to get the edges and sides perfectly sharp. But then it is fortunate that much of the charm lies in the fact that they are homemade.
Have fun with the clear ice cubes!
